Donor
Heart Dysfunction: Brain Death in the Animate
Model |
| |
Presenter:
Dr. Radhika Gadesam |
| |
Organs from
brain-dead donors have a poorer prognosis
after transplantation than organs from living
donors. A possible explanation for this is
that brain death might initiate a systemic
inflammatory response, elicited by a metabolic
stress response or brain ischemia. Donor heart
dysfunction early after transplantation has
been associated with the cytokine storm after
donor brain death. |

Vulnerable
Plaque and Atherosclerotic Animate Model |
| |
Presenter:
Dr. Jinsheng (Jimmy) Li |
| |
On Average1.4
million Americans experience acute coronary
syndrome each year which is mainly secondary
to plaque disruption and thrombosis. This
weeks Journal Club presentation, lead by Dr.
Jimmy Li, will compare the vulnerable plaque
ruptures in the human model with the atherosclerotic
animate model. |

Circulating
Progenitor Cells: Roles and Mechanisms in
Human Health and Disease |
| |
Presenter:
Dr. Traci T. Goodchild |
| |
There is growing
enthusiasm for use of circulating progenitor
cells for intervention in vascular diseases.
However, there is evidence that suggests circulating
progenitor cells impair vascular healing by
contributing to in-stent restenosis. The role
of circulating progenitor cells in both clinical
and preclinical coronary stent implant studies
will need to be further evaluated. |
